Valuing your eye health and maintaining your eyesight is vital. Most patients who suffer from vision problems regret taking their eyesight for granted. Here in Cook & Hayden Vision Care Center, we offer diagnosis, treatment, and management of most vision problems, that affect the human eyes and the visual system. Here is some information about common vision problems we see in our office.
Astigmatism can be detected by an eye exam with an eye care professional and then properly diagnosed with either an automated refraction or a retinoscopy exam, which checks the amount of astigmatism. The condition is easily tended to with contact lenses or glasses, for those who prefer a non-invasive procedure, or refractive surgery, which alters the flow of light onto the retina to readjust the focal point.
People with farsightedness (also called “hyperopia”) can have difficulty focusing on objects that are close, such as print in a book. More severe farsightedness would also cause problems with seeing objects in the distance clearly, such as highway signs. Farsightedness is a relatively common condition, affecting approximately 10-30% of the world’s population. Farsightedness often runs in families and is frequently present at birth. However, many children outgrow it.
Usually, myopia is genetic. It is distinguished by the elongation of the eyeball, which in turn, affects the way light is focused on front of the retina. Myopia tends to deteriorate during childhood and adolescence and it stops by about the age of twenty years old. Unfortunately, by that time patients could require very strong corrective lenses to see clearly.
Presbyopia (Aging Eyes)
Presbyopia is diagnosed through a basic eye exam which determines the general eye health and whether you have near or far-sightedness, astigmatism, or presbyopia. The doctor uses various techniques and tools to assess your vision. They may put eye drops in your eyes to dilate your pupils and ask you to look through several lenses to test your close-up vision.
Eyeglasses are a safe and straightforward way to correct your vision problems if presbyopia causes them.
